Insights and advice about jobs and hiring in the Lehigh Valley.

The Key to Planning Your 2022 Career Growth

Now that the new year is here, you’re ready to get to work — on your career. You want to make some major strides this year, so you’re thinking about working with a temp agency in Lehigh Valley to try out a few different types of jobs, while fleshing out your resume.

This is a great idea, as it will allow you to learn more about what you want from your next job, while gaining valuable experience. The key to getting the most from this is setting SMART goals for your 2022 career growth.

Doing so will help your recruiter find the best temporary opportunities for you, because they’ll know exactly what types of employment experiences to seek out. Here’s how to plan SMART goals that help you get ahead.

A Look at SMART Goals

Specific

Vague goals seem nice in theory, but they don’t get you very far. It’s easy to procrastinate an objective that has no clear bounds — and you don’t want that. Therefore, it’s important to make your goals as specific as possible.

For example, instead of saying you’d like to sharpen your computer skills, you might set a goal to become proficient in QuickBooks.

Measurable

One of the most satisfying parts of working to achieve your goals is the ability to look back at how far you’ve come. This is why quantifying your objectives is a must. When your goals are tied to specific numbers, charting your progress is easy.

For example, you might set a goal to learn to type 70 words per minute, instead of simply striving to type faster.

Attainable

Having big dreams for your career is great. However, there’s such a thing as creating objectives so lofty, they become unrealistic. This essentially sets you up for failure, because it’s essentially impossible to achieve the goal at hand.

For example, striving to complete a certificate program that will boost your credentials is great, but pushing yourself to do so in six months’ time might not be realistic. A heavy course load, added to your existing priorities, could cause you to achieve burnout and ultimately drop out of the program.

Relevant

As a naturally curious person, you’re interested in a lot of different things. However, everything you’d like to learn doesn’t necessarily relate to your career. Therefore, it’s important to make sure your goals are designed to help you get to the place you want to be at the end of 2022.

For example, you might want to learn to speak French, but if being multilingual isn’t important to your career progression, it’s probably best to focus on developing a skill that’s relevant to your work.

Time-Bound

Having a deadline attached to your goals creates a much-needed sense of urgency. When you know you need to complete an objective in a week, month or by the end of the quarter, you’re much more motivated to get it done, so setting target completion dates is a must.

For example, instead of saying you’ll complete a specific goal at some point, challenge yourself to get it done by a specific date.

For our candidates, we help to uncover truly rewarding job opportunities—jobs that are a match to each candidate’s skills, and jobs that offer key experience and growth potential.

We look forward to strengthening our relationships with our current clients and candidates, as well as forming new and exciting partnerships in the future.
