How to Handle Hazardous Materials in the Warehouse

Without the help of a trusted employment advisor, filling Allentown, PA warehouse jobs with top talent can be a challenge. However, after getting new hires in place, it’s important to keep them safe.

Your warehouse has its fair share of hazardous materials. It’s important for workers to know how to interact with these materials on a daily basis, and what to do if an emergency arises. Use this guide from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to keep your team safe.

Four Tips to Handle Hazardous Materials in Your Warehouse

Create a Written Hazard Communication Program

Put proper safety measures in writing by devising a written hazard communication program. This will help increase employee awareness of hazardous chemicals at your warehouse, so they know exactly what they’re working with. Include steps for proper usage during standard operations and emergencies. Putting the plan in writing makes it easy for people to reference at any time.

Properly Label All Containers

This should go without saying, but make sure all chemicals are located in containers that clearly specify what’s inside. Dangerous mix-ups can — and likely will — happen if containers are labeled with the name of one substance, but actually hold another.

Make Material Safety Data Sheets Accessible to All

Chemical manufacturers, distributors and importers are required to provide Safety Data Sheets for each hazardous substance. These sheets offer key information — i.e., physical, health and environmental hazards, protective measures and safety precautions  on the chemical that can be monumentally helpful to workers who handle it.

Devise an Effective Training Program

All new hires should be required to complete a training program that will prepare them to work with — or in the presence of — the hazardous materials at your warehouse. This should include aspects like educating them on all known hazards present at the warehouse and guidance on avoiding exposure.

It’s also wise to require all employees to attend periodic training sessions, to keep their knowledge sharp. After all, you can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of your team.
