How Does One Get Selected for an Interview?

You’ve been searching for jobs in Bethlehem, PA for a while now, but you haven’t gotten too far. This has left you feeling a bit discouraged because you’re not sure what — if anything — you’re doing wrong.

If you could just score an interview, you know you could impress the hiring manager, but that hasn’t happened yet. Take a look at how candidates are chosen for interviews, so you can make the necessary adjustments to be selected next time.

3 Key Considerations in the Interview Selection Process

Personalized Resume and Cover Letter

Your resume and cover letter are the first impression you make on a potential employer. If you’re not customizing these important documents for each job you apply to, this is likely working against you in several ways.

Many companies use applicant tracking software to search resumes for keywords used frequently throughout the job description. If yours doesn’t contain a high enough percentage of these terms, you’re automatically eliminated. Even if you do make it through the filters, a generic cover letter can ruin your chances, because it doesn’t properly sell you for a job.

Strong Attention to Directions

Employers want to hire people who follow instructions. Therefore, many include a subtle test in the application, just to gauge your attention to detail. For example, you might be asked to include a specific subject line when emailing your resume or answer a few questions as part of the application. Failing to do this right will likely put you out of the running for the job.

Trustworthy Referrals

Hiring a new employee is a very time-consuming, expensive process. This is why employers put a lot of weight on referrals. If someone they know and trust is willing to vouch for you, they’re much more likely to bring you in for an interview.

When possible, try to find an “in” at a company you’re applying to. Ask this person — i.e., a shared contact, friend of a friend or your recruiter — to recommend you to the hiring manager and if possible, make a personal introduction. This will help you stand out and monumentally increase your chances of being invited to interview for the job.

CEO Letter

As a staffing and recruitment professional for over  30 years, I have seen many changes in the industry. Over that time, I’ve witnessed a transformation in the way organizations view staffing services. Today, we see more and more companies using staffing services as a strategic tool, rather than just for temporary fill-ins.

At HTSS, Inc., our focus is on helping companies create proactive workforce plans. Our goal is to help our clients use staffing strategically to increase capacity, overcome hiring freezes, access specialized talent, better manage increased workloads, and enhance overall productivity.

For our candidates, we help to uncover truly rewarding job opportunities—jobs that are a match to each candidate’s skills, and jobs that offer key experience and growth potential.

We look forward to strengthening our relationships with our current clients and candidates, as well as forming new and exciting partnerships in the future.
