If you’re like many people, you hit the snooze button so many times in the morning that eating a proper breakfast isn’t an option. The thing is, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Skipping it — or eating something unhealthy — gets your body off to a poor start.
What you might not realize, is you can still have a balanced breakfast, even if you’re short on time.
Five Breakfast Essentials Your Body Needs
If you have a few minutes, give your body a protein boost with a few eggs. You’ll never get bored with this breakfast, as it offers endless variations — i.e., scrambled, poached, sunny-side up. You can even get really creative by making an omelet with vegetables or an egg sandwich — with heart-healthy whole wheat bread, of course.
Avoid mid-morning hunger pangs by enjoying a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. The complex carbohydrates are slowly broken down by the body, providing you with hours of energy. Jazz your oatmeal up by adding peanut butter, cinnamon or fruit to make it even more delicious.
Give your body a healthy dose of sugar with a serving of strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries. These high fiber fruits are packed with antioxidants and provide your body with a variety of nutrients.
A fantastic source of protein, Greek yogurt is filled with probiotics that can boost your immune system and reduce stomach issues. Also high in calcium and potassium, one serving offers a number of health benefits. Eat it plain or top it with fruit and granola for a luxurious meal.
Everyone is different, but adults are generally advised to drink eight, eight-ounce glasses of water per day. Hydrating first thing in the morning is a great start to the day because it allows you to start working toward this level before leaving the house. If you need caffeine to wake up, follow your glass of water with a cup of coffee or tea.
