Insights and advice about jobs and hiring in the Lehigh Valley.

Effective Networking for Career Advancement

You’re going places in your career. Maybe you’re content with where you are right now, but you have big plans for the future, so networking is a must.

Whether your contact list is currently on the smaller side or already robust, there’s no such thing as having too many relevant connections. Here’s some advice to help you network effectively.

Join a Professional Association

One of the best ways to connect with like-minded people, a professional association offers a variety of opportunities. You’ll get to connect with other members at events, take advantage of learning opportunities, and impress potential employers with this affiliation on your resume.

There’s all kinds of professional associations to choose from — i.e., alumni associations, trade associations, regional networking groups — so consider joining more than one. The more active you are in the group, the more connections you’ll build, so make room in your schedule to participate.

Stay in Touch With Former Colleagues

You probably won’t work with the same people forever, but that doesn’t mean you should end the relationship when one of you leaves the company. Former co-workers can prove very valuable to your career.

If you stay in touch, they can let you know if a job that might interest you opens up with their current employer. They can also serve as references when you’re in the running for a new job, so don’t take them for granted.

Attend Industry Events

Your industry likely has a variety of local and national events. It’s time to start attending some to make new contacts.

This could mean attending after-work happy hours, out-of-town conferences, seminars and trade shows or even serving in a relevant role on a board. The more you get out there, the more contacts you’ll make.

Connect With a Recruiter

The right job doesn’t always come along when you’re actively looking. Building a relationship with a local recruiter can allow you to passively seek new opportunities.

You’ll meet with them to discuss your career goals and what your ideal next job looks like, then they’ll keep an eye out for the right position. You won’t even need to lift a finger until they find new openings for you to review.

CEO Letter

As a staffing and recruitment professional for over  30 years, I have seen many changes in the industry. Over that time, I’ve witnessed a transformation in the way organizations view staffing services. Today, we see more and more companies using staffing services as a strategic tool, rather than just for temporary fill-ins.

At HTSS, Inc., our focus is on helping companies create proactive workforce plans. Our goal is to help our clients use staffing strategically to increase capacity, overcome hiring freezes, access specialized talent, better manage increased workloads, and enhance overall productivity.

For our candidates, we help to uncover truly rewarding job opportunities—jobs that are a match to each candidate’s skills, and jobs that offer key experience and growth potential.

We look forward to strengthening our relationships with our current clients and candidates, as well as forming new and exciting partnerships in the future.

Sincerely,

Pat Howells
