Why You Should Stretch Before and After Every Warehouse Shift

Warehouse work is rewarding, but it can take a toll on the body. Chances are, you spend your shift on your feet, doing at least some heavy lifting. As one of the leading warehouse temp agencies in Lehigh Valley, PA, HTSS, Inc. understands the importance of stretching before and after every shift.

At first glance, this might seem a bit excessive, but it’s not. The amount of physical effort you exert during a shift is probably more than many people use during a workout. You need to take care of your body so you don’t become injured.

Stretching Before Your Shift

Taking a few moments to stretch before your warehouse shift will increase your range of motion and reduce your risk of injury. Reducing muscle tension helps prepare your body for physical exertion — i.e., your warehouse shift — and promotes circulation.

If you’re just getting started with your stretching practice, take it slow. Lightly stretch your muscles and increase your movement as you feel ready. Each stretch should feel comfortable and allow you to release tension. You’ll likely want to focus on dynamic stretching — i.e., active movements — that allow your body to experience a full range of motion.

Accompany your stretches with slow, deep breaths, as this sends oxygen to your muscles. In addition to getting your body ready for a hard day’s work, this will also relax your mind and help you prepare for any challenge that comes your way.

Stretching After Your Shift

When your workday is done, you’re probably tired and ready to get off your feet. However, dedicating a few minutes to stretching can offer lasting benefits. For example, you can boost your flexibility, improve blood flow, enjoy better posture, experience less back pain, and lower your stress levels.

As far as which parts of the body to stretch, everyone has different needs. Concentrate on areas that feel the tightest. You’ll want to focus on static stretches — i.e., those where no movement is involved — holding each position for approximately 20 to 60 seconds.

As a staffing and recruitment professional for over  30 years, I have seen many changes in the industry. Today, we see more and more companies using staffing services as a strategic tool, rather than just for temporary fill-ins.

At HTSS, Inc., our focus is on helping companies create proactive workforce plans. Our goal is to help our clients use staffing strategically to increase capacity, overcome hiring freezes, access specialized talent, better manage increased workloads, and enhance overall productivity.

For our candidates, we help to uncover truly rewarding job opportunities—jobs that are a match to each candidate’s skills, and jobs that offer key experience and growth potential.

We look forward to strengthening our relationships with our current clients and candidates, as well as forming new and exciting partnerships in the future.
