The Three Things You Should Do When Working in a New Warehouse for the First Time

Three Things You Should Do When Working in a New Warehouse for the First Time from HTSS Inc.

After searching for warehouse jobs in Allentown, PA for a while, you finally found the right one. Starting a new job is exciting, but you need to play it safe. Even if you’ve worked in a warehouse before, every company is different, so ease you have to ease your way in.

In most cases, you’ll attend a mandatory orientation, where you’ll learn the basic information needed to do your job safely and efficiently. This will provide a strong foundation, but ultimately staying safe on the job and doing outstanding work fall into your hands.

Learn the Rules of the Warehouse

Every workplace has rules, but following them is even more important in a warehouse because safety risks are around every corner. Find out things like when personal protective equipment (PPE) needs to be worn, which pieces of equipment require special certifications to use and how often you’re required to take breaks to keep your mind alert.

Make Sure Your Personal Protective Equipment Fits

If your job requires you to wear PPE — i.e., rubber gloves, hard hat, respirator, earplugs, safety goggles — take it seriously. Make sure yours fits properly, learn how to care for it, find out how to tell if it’s working properly and how to correctly dispose of it or store it.

Don’t enter the work zone where the PPE is needed unless you’ve been properly fitted and trained on how to use it. The last thing you want is to sustain a very preventable injury at your new job.

Find Out What to Do in a Warehouse Emergency

Hopefully, an emergency will never happen at your warehouse, but if it does, you need to be prepared. Make sure you’re aware of the main hazards associated with your job — and the warehouse in general — and what to do in the event of a crisis. This could involve anything from knowing where a master shut off valve is to locate the exit closest to your workstation.

Taking these three steps will get you off to a great start at your new warehouse job. Your manager will be impressed with your initiative, and you’ll get to enjoy peace of mind in knowing you’re doing everything possible to contribute to a safe and healthy workplace.
