Insights and advice about jobs and hiring in the Lehigh Valley.

Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?

Many job interview questions are relatively straightforward, making them simple to answer because you know exactly what the hiring manager wants to hear. Others aren’t so easy to interpret, so coming up with the right response can be challenging — especially if you didn’t prepare for it in advance.

The “Where do you see yourself in five years?” question certainly falls into the vague category, as you can take your response in a number of directions. This inquiry often stumps candidates, making it a favorite of interviewers, so learn how to prepare an answer sure to impress.

3 Points to Include in Your Response

Make sure your reply to this question includes these three key points.

Realistic Career Progression

Employers want to hire a motivated candidate who is eager to expand their skillset. Convey your interest in the responsibilities associated with the job and explain your hopes that this experience will serve as a stepping stone for further growth in the field. No reasonable hiring manager expects a talented professional to stay in the same position for five years without being promoted, but there’s no need to be too specific about the job title you hope to have by then. The last thing you want to do is insult the person or make them feel threated by telling them you plan to be their boss in a few years.

Company Loyalty

Hiring and training employees takes a lot of hard work, so the interviewer wants to choose a loyal candidate who won’t leave as soon as something better comes along. Basically, the interviewer wants to hear the job builds the groundwork for your five-year plan and the company is a place where you can accomplish your goals for the future. If you’re still trying to figure things out, that’s okay, but keep this uncertainty out of your response.

Genuine Enthusiasm for the Work

Employees who are passionate about their jobs don’t just come into the office to earn a paycheck — they consider the work an enormously fulfilling part of their lives. These people aren’t just looking for a temporary gig until something better comes along, they’re in it for the long haul. This level of gusto is exactly what employers want to hear, so express your steadfast commitment to the field so they know you’re not going anywhere.

CEO Letter

As a staffing and recruitment professional for over  30 years, I have seen many changes in the industry. Over that time, I’ve witnessed a transformation in the way organizations view staffing services. Today, we see more and more companies using staffing services as a strategic tool, rather than just for temporary fill-ins.

At HTSS, Inc., our focus is on helping companies create proactive workforce plans. Our goal is to help our clients use staffing strategically to increase capacity, overcome hiring freezes, access specialized talent, better manage increased workloads, and enhance overall productivity.

For our candidates, we help to uncover truly rewarding job opportunities—jobs that are a match to each candidate’s skills, and jobs that offer key experience and growth potential.

We look forward to strengthening our relationships with our current clients and candidates, as well as forming new and exciting partnerships in the future.

Sincerely,
